Band of the Wild Costumes Review 2026: Pajama Costumes, Baby Dragons & Sizing — What to Buy
Last updated: October 2026
Band of the Wild makes children's costumes that are cut like pajamas: a soft cotton top and pants (95% cotton, 5% spandex on most listings), plus a hat, tail, wings or collar that snaps, ties or belts on and comes off again. Sizes run from preemie or 3-6 months up to 10 or 12 years on most styles, prices run from $29 for a plain pajama base to $150 for the fruit costumes, and most full costumes land between $98 and $125. Everything is handmade in California.
The honest short version: if you want a Halloween costume your child will still be wearing to bed in February, this is the brand to buy. If you want a $20 polyester one-piece for a single night, it is not. This review walks through every Band of the Wild line we carry, the sizes each one actually comes in, what the listings say about fabric and care, and which costume to buy first.
Buy it for: the pajama costumes ($78 to $98), the dragons ($125), a first-Halloween bunny, sheep or bear ($98 to $115), and the $36 to $45 bonnets and wings that turn plain pajamas into a costume.
Skip it for: a one-night budget costume (most full sets are $98 to $125), anything you need to tumble dry (every care note says line dry), and a child who wants a plush, furry jumpsuit rather than soft cotton.
Sizing: labeled by age, not height or weight. Most styles run 3-6 months to 10 or 12 years; the baby-only versions stop at 2T; the Mushroom and Baby Bear costumes and most hats go up to adult.
Band of the Wild pajama costumes: tiger, mushroom, dalmatian and zebra
The pajama costumes are the reason to know this brand. The Tiger Pajama Costume ($98) is an orange-and-black striped cotton top and pants with an eared hood and a curved tail that rides on an elastic waistband, listed from 0-3 months to 10 years. The Dalmatian Puppy Pajama Costume ($98, 3-6 months to 10 years) does the same in spots, with floppy puppy ears on a soft hat, and the Zebra Pajama Costume ($78, 3-6 months to 10 years) adds a standing black mane to the headpiece. All three list the same fabric, 95% cotton and 5% spandex, and all three are made in the USA.
What makes these different from a jumpsuit costume is the construction: the body is ordinary two-piece pajamas, and the animal lives in the pieces that come off. The hood or hat closes under the chin, the tail sits on its own covered elastic belt, and a collar ties at the back. On Halloween night the child wears all of it; at 8 p.m. the tail and hat come off and the pajamas stay on.
The Mushroom Pajama Costume ($65 to $120) is sold in three combinations: the red-and-white spotted hat alone ($65), the hat with a ruffle collar ($80), or the hat, collar and white pajamas together ($120). Sizes go from 3-6 months to adult, which is how a toddler, an eight-year-old and a parent end up as matching toadstools. For babies there is also a Baby Toadstool Halloween Costume ($120, 3-6 months to 2 years) with a padded hat, and a Baby Tiger Pajama Costume ($98, 3-6 to 18-24 months). The Circus Bunny Pajama Costume ($98, 9-12 months to 10 years) puts a long-eared white bonnet and a blue star-print ruffle collar on a white base.
Baby dragon costume: the Band of the Wild dragon line
Band of the Wild's baby dragon costume is a cotton pajama set with padded, shimmering gold wings, a spiked hood and a tail, priced at $125. The baby-only dragons run 6-9 months to 2T, and the full-size dragons start at 3-6 months and go up to 12 years, so one design covers a newborn's first Halloween and a sixth-grader's.
Ten dragons are available right now. The full-size line is the Emerald Sky Dragon Pajama Costume (jewel green, 3-6 months to 12 years), the Golden Night Dragon Pajama Costume (black with gold spikes, 3-6 months to 12 years), the Sunfire Red Dragon With Gold Wings (3-6 months to 12 years), the Jade Blue And Gold Dragon Costume (deep turquoise, 3-6 months to 12 years) and the Pink Sky Dragon (9-12 months to 12 years). Each listing describes the same build: a soft cotton pajama base, a hood with golden spikes, a matching tail and wings that shimmer when the child moves.
The baby versions, Baby Green Dragon, Baby Pink Dragon, Baby Jade Dragon and Baby Red Dragon, run 6-9 months to 2T, and the Baby Black Dragon Halloween Costume runs 3-6 months to 2 years. Their listings state 95% cotton, 5% spandex and machine wash cold, line dry. If a child has asked for a Wings of Fire dragon, the Sunfire Red and Golden Night are the closest colors; there is no licensed tie-in, and the wings are gold on every dragon in the line.
Infant sizing note: the wings are padded and the hood is spiked, so for a baby who will mostly be carried or in a stroller, the wings matter more than the tail. For a crawler, the tail on its elastic belt stays out of the way better than a one-piece dragon with a sewn-in tail.
Bunny, sheep and bear costumes for a first Halloween
The Ivory Bunny Costume ($98) is the one to look at for a baby's first Halloween: it is listed from preemie to 12 years, the lop-eared bonnet is lined and snaps under the chin, and the faux-fur tail sits on a covered elastic belt rather than being sewn to the pants. The Grey Bunny Costume ($98, 0-3 months to 10 years) is the same costume in gray, and the Baby Ivory Bunny and Baby Grey Bunny Halloween Costume ($98) cover 0-3 months to 2 years only.
The White Sheep Costume and Black Sheep Costume ($115, 3-6 months to 12 years) use a textured bouclé hat with tan inner ears that closes under the chin with hook-and-loop, plus a lamb tail on a covered elastic waistband. The Baby White Sheep and Baby Black Sheep Halloween Costume ($115) are listed from preemie and newborn to 2 years, and their listings specifically mention newborn photography and nativity plays, which is the honest use case for a $115 costume on a baby who will not remember it: it works for Halloween in October, the holiday photo in December and the Easter picture in April.
The Baby Bear Costume is the most flexible purchase in the line because it is sold in three pieces: the faux-fur hat alone ($35), the hat with a tail ($45), or the full costume with the cotton pajama base ($98), in sizes from 0-3 months to adult. The hat is made from upcycled fabric and lined with cotton. A matching Adult Bear Hat ($35, or $45 with the tail) exists for the parent. The Baby Bear Halloween Costume ($98, preemie to 2 years) is the baby-only version with a plush hat and fluffy tail.
Witches, clowns, unicorns and aliens
The Black Witch Halloween Costume ($120, 6-9 months to 12 years) is a five-piece set: a cotton pajama top and pants, a shimmering half skirt and a matching witch hat cut from deadstock crinkle taffeta, and a maple-wood star wand left unfinished so the child can paint it. The Green Witch Halloween Costume ($120) is the same set in green, and the Baby Black Witch and Baby Green Witch Halloween Costume ($110) cover 6-9 months to 2 years. The listings say every piece is designed to be worn separately, so the skirt goes over leggings in November and the pajamas go to bed.
The clowns are the most vintage-looking costumes in the line. The Harlequin Clown Costume ($109, 3-6 months to 10 years) is a red-and-white diamond-print base with a blue ruffle collar printed with yellow stars and a striped party hat topped with a red pompom; the Pink Clown Costume ($120, 9-12 months to 10 years) adds striped bloomers and a polka-dot hat; the Rainbow Stars Clown Costume ($111 to $120, 3-6 months to 10 years) uses a star-print all-cotton base, red-and-white striped bloomers and a yellow striped linen hat.
For unicorns, the Rainbow Sky Unicorn ($99, 3-6 months to 12 years) is a sky-blue pajama base with a flowing rainbow mane and soft ears, the Rainbow Dream Unicorn ($99, 3 to 12 years) is a white base with a pastel mane and gold horn, and the Baby Blue Unicorn Halloween Costume ($99) covers 6-9 months to 2 years. The Sky Blue Pegasus ($120, 2 to 12 years) is the same idea with wings. The Cosmic Green Alien ($99, preemie to 10 years) is the odd one out and the most fun: a neon green pajama base with shiny boot covers, shoulder gear and wrist guards, with a Baby Cosmic Green Alien ($99, preemie to 2 years) to match.
Bonnets, wings, tutus and hats: the $25 to $45 add-ons
If the budget is $50 rather than $100, the add-ons carry the costume. A lined cotton Pink Bunny Bonnet, Bunny Bonnet or Gray Bunny Bonnet ($36) over plain pajamas is a complete bunny; each comes in 0-6 months, 6-12 months and 2-7 years and snaps under the chin. The bonnet-and-tail sets in white, pink and gray ($45) add the faux-fur tail on its belt.
The Golden Pegasus Wings ($45, one size) and Pink Fairy Wings ($45, toddler and child sizes) are cut from deadstock crinkle taffeta with elastic shoulder straps, and the listings suggest them for pegasus, fairy and angel costumes. The Red Fairy Tutu ($39, 3-6 months to 8 years) and the striped linen Pink Bloomer ($40, 3-6 months to 10 years) are the bottoms that go with them. The White Unicorn Hat and Blue Unicorn Hat ($41) are made from recycled cotton and run from 6-18 months (blue only) or 2-5 years up to adult. The Pink Ruffle ($25) is a cotton-linen collar on a ribbon tie, and the Pink Polka-dot Hat ($43) is a one-size party hat cut from rescued deadstock fabric.
The useful trick here is that none of these need a Band of the Wild base. A bonnet and tail over any white pajamas is a bunny, and the wings strap over a sweater. That is the $45 version of the costume, and for a crawler it is often the better one, because there is less to pull off. For more on everyday hats that double as costume pieces, see our kids' and baby hats guide.
Holiday elf pajama costumes for December
The same pajama idea carries into December. The Christmas Elf Pajama Costume ($89, 3-6 months to 10 years) is green cotton pajamas with a frilled collar and a Santa hat; the Red Holiday Elf Pajama Costume and White Holiday Elf Pajama Costume ($89) are the same set in red and white, with pointed hem details that read as elf on Christmas morning and as pajamas every other night. The Pink Holiday Elf ($53, 2 to 4 years) and Blue Hanukkah Elf Pajama Costume ($53, 4 to 8 years) are the smaller-run versions.
For a child who wants a dress, the Red Elf Holiday Dress and Pink Elf Holiday Dress ($53, 6-12 months to 10 years) have a twirly cotton skirt and a fleece hat with a faux-fur pompom. The Eco-friendly Family Santa Hat ($35) runs preemie through adult in sweatshirt cotton with sherpa trim and a faux-fur pompom; note that the No Plastic Family Santa Hat and Adult Family Santa Hat ($45) use an upcycled rabbit-fur pompom, which is real fur. A Pink Elf Hat ($21) covers 6-24 months to adult. If the December plan is a dress rather than pajamas, our toddler and girls' Christmas dresses guide covers the twirl, tulle and plaid options.

What sizes do Band of the Wild costumes run?
Band of the Wild costumes are sized by age label, not by height or weight: 3-6 months, 6-9 months, 9-12 months, 12-18 months, 18-24 months, then 2 through 12 years, with 7, 9 and 11 skipped on most styles. The listings do not publish a garment measurement chart, so the age label is the only sizing information available before the box arrives.
Three patterns are worth knowing. First, the baby-only versions (anything titled "Baby" plus a Halloween costume name) stop at 2 years or 2T, while the full-size version of the same animal usually runs to 10 or 12 years, so a 2-year-old can be bought either way. Second, not every style covers every size: the Circus Bunny and Pink Sky Dragon are available from 9-12 months, the Rainbow Dream Unicorn from 3 years, the Sky Blue Pegasus from 2 years, and the baby witches stop at 2 years. Third, the labels are not consistent across listings: one costume says "2 year", another "2 years", a third "2T", and they mean the same step.
The brand's own answer to growth is the plain Ochre Pajama ($29, 3-6 months to 10 years), a deadstock-cotton top and pants sold without any costume pieces. Its listing explains the idea: keep the hat, tail and wings, and buy the pajama a size up when the child outgrows the base. At $29 that is far cheaper than a second $125 dragon. For a more general look at how toddler costume sizing works across brands, our toddler Halloween costumes guide compares the 12-month-to-4T systems.
Fabric, care and the sleepwear question
The base of almost every costume is listed as 95% cotton and 5% spandex, a stretch knit. The pieces that make it a costume use different materials, and the listings name them: an upcycled faux-fur hat on the bears, bouclé on the sheep, cotton fleece on the elf hats, sweatshirt cotton with sherpa trim on the Santa hats, deadstock crinkle taffeta on the witch skirts and fairy wings, linen on the clown hat and bloomers, and maple wood for the witch wand. A handful of listings (the Christmas Elf Pajama Costume, Pink Clown Costume, Red Fairy Tutu and the wings) say "cotton" or name no fiber at all.
Care, where the listings give it, is one line: machine wash cold and line dry. No listing mentions a dryer. In practice that means the pajamas go in the wash and the faux-fur, taffeta and bouclé pieces get spot-cleaned, and a costume worn on October 31 and needed for a party on November 1 should be washed the week before.
On sleepwear: the listings call the base "pajamas" and describe the sets as made for play and bedtime, but none of them states a flammability label. US rules for children's sleepwear (16 CFR 1615 for sizes 0 through 6X, with a parallel rule for sizes 7 to 14) require a garment sold as sleepwear to either resist flame or be snug-fitting. The costumes are a stretch knit, but check the sewn-in label when the box arrives before treating them as nightwear, and take the wings, tail and hat off at bedtime regardless. Two listings make a related point themselves: the Baby Tomato Costume says the stuffed body is not to be worn unattended.
From trick-or-treating to bedtime: how the pieces work
The whole appeal of the line is that the costume is the warm layer. A Band of the Wild set is long sleeves and long pants in a cotton knit, so a child wearing one on a cold October night needs a base layer underneath and a coat for the walk, not a costume squeezed over a snowsuit. Put a long-sleeved shirt and leggings under the pajamas and the costume stays visible.
When the night ends, the costume pieces come off in the order they went on: the tail belt unclips, the hat unsnaps (or the hook-and-loop on the sheep hats separates), the collar's ribbon untie at the back, and the wings slide off their shoulder straps. What is left is a pair of pajamas the child is already wearing. That is the practical difference from a polyester jumpsuit, which has to come all the way off before bed.
The after-Halloween life is also why the brand sells the pieces separately. A bunny bonnet is a bedtime hat in November, the witch's half skirt goes over leggings for a December party, and the $29 Ochre Pajama replaces the base when it gets too short. For plain pajamas to pair with the add-ons, our baby pajamas guide covers the footed and two-piece options.
Where to buy Band of the Wild
EasyTot carries the full Band of the Wild line in one collection, where you can filter by product type (costumes, costume sets, hats, wings and sleepwear) and by size. Every listing shows the sizes currently available, which matters with this brand because the full-size and baby versions of an animal are separate products with different size runs. For the brand in context against other costume makers, see our most popular kids' Halloween costumes roundup, where Band of the Wild is one of only two lines reaching past 10 years.
The honest complaints
The price. Most full costumes are $98 to $125, the fruit costumes are $150, and a Dress Up America toddler dragon is $18. A Band of the Wild costume only makes financial sense if it is going to be worn as pajamas for months, which is exactly what it is designed for. Buy it as a one-night costume and it is overpriced.
Line dry only. Every care instruction on the line says machine wash cold and line dry. For a costume that doubles as pajamas and gets washed weekly, that is a real inconvenience, and nothing on the listings says what happens to the spandex blend or the printed stripes in a dryer.
No measurement chart. Sizes are age labels and the listings give no chest, length or weight guidance, so a tall 3-year-old and a small 3-year-old are both guessing. Add the inconsistent labels ("2 year" versus "2T") and sizing across two products is harder than it should be.
Pieces sold separately, and priced accordingly. The Mushroom hat alone is $65 and the pajama adds $40 to that. The Baby Bear hat is $35 and the full costume $98. The Pink Ruffle collar is $25 on its own. This is flexible, but a parent assembling a costume from parts can spend more than the price of a complete set without noticing.
Not every style in every size. The Circus Bunny is available from 9-12 months, the Rainbow Dream Unicorn from 3 years, the Sky Blue Pegasus at 2 years, and the baby witches stop at 2 years. Check the size list on the product page before falling in love with a color.
Some listings are thin on fiber content. The Christmas Elf Pajama Costume, Pink Clown Costume, Red Fairy Tutu and the two wings do not state a fabric blend. For a brand that sells itself on cotton, that gap is odd.
Real fur on two Santa hats. The No Plastic and Adult Family Santa Hats use an upcycled rabbit-fur pompom. The Eco-friendly Family Santa Hat uses faux fur. The listings say so, but the product names do not.
Hats close under the chin. Snaps and hook-and-loop keep a bonnet on, but a baby who hates hats will still pull at it. The bear and bunny hoods with ears are the costume; without them it is brown or white pajamas.
How Band of the Wild compares
Versus Dress Up America: the mass-market costume brand, priced from $5 to $120 with most pieces around $33. Its animal costumes are 100% polyester jumpsuits with zippers, masks and elastic cuffs, sized Toddler 2 through Extra Large (14+) and adult; the Plush Tiger Costume is $35 and the Dragon Costume For Toddlers is $18. Cheaper, warmer-looking, easier to find in big-kid sizes, and not something anyone sleeps in.
Versus Teetot & Co.: $32 to $54 costume sets, including a Green Dragon Costume and Kid's Dragon Costume at $54 with jumpsuit, headpiece and separate wings, in sizes 3/4 and 5/6 only. A good middle option for a preschooler who wants a dragon for one season.
Versus Masquerade: the budget baby brand, $3 to $85 with a median around $19; the Baby Koala Bear Costume is $18 in 7-12 and 12-24 months and the Infant Cuddly Lion has inner-leg snaps for diaper changes. If the costume is for one party and one photo, this is where the money goes.
Versus Souza!: $25 to $70 capes and dress-up pieces, with dragon and dinosaur capes for 4 to 7 years at $47 to $50. A cape over regular clothes is the easiest costume for a child who refuses hoods.
Of the four, Band of the Wild is the only line built on cotton pajamas, the only one sized from preemie, and the most expensive by a wide margin. The comparison is really pajamas-plus-costume against costume-only, and the price gap is the price of the pajamas.
Who should buy it, and who should skip it
Buy it if your child lives in costumes and you are tired of polyester, if you want a first-Halloween outfit that also works for newborn and holiday photos (the sheep and bunnies), if you need an infant-to-age-12 dragon, or if matching family costumes are the plan (the Mushroom, Bear and Santa hats go to adult sizes).
Skip it if the budget is under $50 for a complete costume (buy the $36 bonnet instead, or look at Masquerade), if a dryer is non-negotiable, if the child is nine or older and wants a specific licensed character, or if you need a costume that goes over a snowsuit.
Bottom line: Band of the Wild is the best cotton pajama costume we carry and the only brand doing it from preemie to 12 years. At $98 to $125, treat it as pajamas that happen to be a dragon, and the price makes sense.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Band of the Wild costumes pajamas?
Yes. Every Band of the Wild costume is built on a cotton pajama top and pants (95% cotton, 5% spandex on most listings); the hat, tail, wings or collar are separate pieces that snap, tie or belt on and come off again. The brand also sells a plain Ochre Pajama base for $29 so the accessories can be reused as a child grows.
What sizes do Band of the Wild costumes run?
Most full costumes are listed from 3-6 months to 10 or 12 years, labeled by age rather than height or weight. The baby-only versions (Baby Green Dragon, Baby Ivory Bunny, Baby Bear Halloween Costume) stop at 2 years or 2T, bonnets come in 0-6 months, 6-12 months and 2-7 years, and several hats and the Mushroom and Baby Bear costumes go up to adult sizes.
Is there a Band of the Wild baby dragon costume?
Yes. The baby-specific dragons (Baby Green, Pink, Jade and Red Dragon) run 6-9 months to 2T and the Baby Black Dragon runs 3-6 months to 2 years, all at $125. The full-size Emerald Sky, Golden Night, Sunfire Red and Jade Blue dragons start at 3-6 months and go up to 12 years at the same price.
Can you machine wash Band of the Wild costumes?
The listings that give care instructions say machine wash cold and line dry; none mention a dryer. The cotton pajama pieces are the washable part. Treat the padded wings, faux-fur tails and bouclé or fleece hats as spot-clean items, and take them off before the wash.
Where are Band of the Wild costumes made?
The listings say the costumes are handmade in California (several name Los Angeles or Southern California), from 95% cotton, 5% spandex fabric, with hats, skirts and wings cut from deadstock and upcycled materials. The plush Teddy Bear is the one exception; its listing says it is hand-sewn in North Carolina.
Can parents get a matching Band of the Wild costume?
Several styles come in adult sizes: the Mushroom Pajama Costume hat, the Baby Bear Costume and the separate Adult Bear Hat ($35, or $45 with a tail), the White Unicorn Hat and Blue Unicorn Hat, and the Family Santa Hats, which run from preemie to adult. The sheep and bunny costumes' listings also mention adult sizes.
