If the fabric matters to you, two brands make small backpacks from recycled or organic material without turning them into adult bags. The Mon Coeur Recycled Materials Apple Backpack ($69) is made in Portugal from recycled and organic cotton, with padded adjustable straps with buckles, a carrying handle, side compartments, a large exterior pocket with snap closures, and a contrast lining with piped seams; the Mon Coeur Recycled Backpack ($72) adds durable RePES fabric in the brand's primary-color print. Mon Coeur does not list dimensions, so check the product page against the sizes-by-age chart below before buying for a 2-year-old; on the brand's own photos it fits children of about 4 to 6.

The Talking Out Of Turn Mini Backpacks ($68) are made from recycled water bottles, with a zippered main compartment, a front pouch with a snap closure and nylon webbing straps, in Wavy Daisy, Carnival Check, Cool Funky Daisy and Gradient Block prints; the brand's vegan-leather Mini Backpack ($22 to $40) has a ripstop lining and is described as a purse or a little one's bag. Neither lists a height, so treat them as preschool-and-up until you have measured one.

"Toddler" backpacks that are really school-age bags

Several bags sold under the toddler label are sized for a 6-year-old or an adult, and they are the easiest mistake to make in this category. The Moon Nude quilted backpacks (Peony, Roze, Strawberry, Lemonade, Teddy and Candy, $57 to $59.95) are lovely, but they come in one size, 11 x 16 x 5 inches, with no chest strap; at 16 inches tall the bag reaches from a toddler's shoulders to below their bottom, and every model photo the brand publishes is an adult. Toddler backpack sizes by age

A toddler backpack should span from just below the shoulders to the waist, never lower. Measure your child from the top of the shoulder to the belly button, subtract an inch, and that is the tallest bag to buy. What fits inside a toddler daycare backpack

A 12-inch toddler backpack has roughly the volume of a large shoebox, so pack for the day, not the week. A workable daycare load is: one full change of clothes rolled tightly (a rolled outfit is about half the height of a folded one), a travel pack of wipes, two or three diapers or a spare pair of underwear, a 12-ounce water bottle in the side pocket if the bag has one, and one comfort item. Put the wet-bag or a gallon zip bag in the front pocket so the teacher finds it first. That load weighs about a pound and a half, which a 2-year-old can carry from the car to the door.

What does not fit, and should not: a full-size lunch bag (use a Pac Pac cubby or a small bento), a 20-ounce bottle (it will tip a 12-inch bag backward), and a blanket, which goes to daycare on Monday in a separate tote and stays there. Straps, chest clips and how heavy is too heavy

The American Academy of Pediatrics' guidance on backpack safety is written for schoolchildren, but its rules scale down: a backpack should not weigh more than 15 percent of the child's body weight, it should have two broad, padded shoulder straps that are always both worn, it should sit from the waist up to about 1 to 2 inches below the shoulders, and a waist belt or chest strap helps keep the weight close to the body. For a 25-pound toddler that 15 percent is under 4 pounds including the bag, which is why the daycare load above stops at about a pound and a half.

In practice the chest clip is the feature that matters most under 3, because a toddler's shoulders slope and a bag without one slides off within a block. How to clean a toddler backpack

Read the listing before you buy, because the bags in this guide split into three care groups. Wipe-clean bags (sigikid, Mebie Baby, the Light + Nine easy-clean fabric, Miniware's Oxford cloth) take a damp cloth and a drop of dish soap on the spot, then air dry with the zippers open. Spot-clean-only bags (the ZOOCCHINI Square) should never go in the washer because the waterproof coating on the main compartment can delaminate. Cotton canvas and cotton bags (Peppercorn Kids, Mon Coeur) will take a gentle hand wash in cool water, but check the brand's page first and expect the straps to take a day to dry.

Two habits prevent most of the smell: empty the bag every evening, including the front pocket where the half-eaten snack lives, and keep a gallon zip bag inside for anything wet so it never touches the lining. Sprinkle baking soda in an emptied bag overnight when it starts to smell of daycare, and shake it out over the sink in the morning.

How to get a toddler to carry their own backpack

Three things work, in this order. First, let the child choose the bag from two or three you have already approved for size; a 2-year-old who picked the dinosaur will carry the dinosaur. Second, keep the bag under a pound for the first month, which means a lovey and a snack and nothing else; the daycare load can ride in your hand until carrying is a habit. Third, put the bag on at the same point every day, at the front door or the car door, and take it off at the same point at the other end, so it becomes part of leaving rather than a negotiation.

Expect the bag to be abandoned on the ground at least once a day until about age 3; that is normal, and it is why the first bag should be cheap enough to lose and small enough that it is not doing real work. By 3 to 4 most children will carry a 12-to-13-inch bag with a folder and a bottle in it for the length of a parking lot, which is all a preschool needs.
